

Massachusetts passed away at home on May 15, 2013 with family by her
side.
Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late
Catherine Hennessey and Edwin “Pat” Gorman.
Dr. McCarthy served as President of Lyndon State College in Vermont
for 6 years and President of Missouri Western State University for 17
years before retiring on Cape Cod. As the first woman to lead a
4-year university in Missouri, Dr. McCarthy led significant expansion
to the university campus, instituted “smart” classroom technology,
established the 4-year nursing program, Honors program, Health
Information Management and Physical Therapy Assistant programs, among
others. Under her leadership, Lyndon State College established its own
television station, and introduced new 4-year programs in business,
communications arts and sciences, and computer science. Dr. McCarthy
was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and
received her MED from Boston University, and EDD and Honorary
Doctorate of Law from UMass/Amherst. During her retirement years, Dr.
McCarthy served as the Chair of the UMass Cape Cod Alumni Scholarship
Fund and enjoyed travel and time spent with friends and family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. James McCarthy, and her
brother, Philip Gorman.
Dr. McCarthy is survived by sister-in-law Frances Gorman of Westfield,
MA, and her nieces and nephews and their spouses, Janet Gorman Kieran
and Catherine Gorman DeMeo of Marlborough, MA, Phil Gorman of
Montrose, CA, David Gorman of Los Gatos, CA, grand-niece Jennifer
Gorman and grand-nephews Tommy, Conor and Shane Kieran.
Visiting hours will be Friday, May 24, 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the Doane,
Beal and Ames Funeral Home at 729 Rt. 134 in South Dennis, MA,
followed by a funeral mass at the St. Pius Catholic Church at 5
Barbara St. in South Yarmouth, MA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the UMass
Cape Cod Alumni Scholarship Fund and mailed to 155 Gilbert Lane,
Harwich Port, MA 02646, or to the Edwin D. Gorman Public Service
Internship and mailed to the Missouri Western State University
Foundation at 4525 Down Drive, St. Joseph, MO, 64507.
