OBITUARIO

Joseph F. Casey

5 julio , 19548 septiembre , 2019

Joseph F. Casey, age 65, of East Dennis passed away on Sunday, September 8, after a long illness. A lifelong Massachusetts resident, Joe grew up in Cambridge and also lived for many years in Wakefield. A devoted husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend, Joe always put others first. Joe was a voracious reader and Anglophile, which informed the first chapter of his long career in education as an English teacher at Arlington High School, where he met his wife of 36 years Ellie. His passion for education led to significant contributions to the lives of countless students, families, and educators over his more than 30 year-long career.

He became a fixture in whichever community he worked, embracing his association with the school communities as a teacher in Arlington and Burlington, the director of curriculum & technology in Georgetown, assistant superintendent in Stoneham, and superintendent of schools in Melrose. Joe thoroughly enjoyed travel abroad, but felt especially at home during summer vacations on Cape Cod where he and his wife eventually moved upon retirement. He was a fitness enthusiast and an avid golfer, continually honing his skills. He also enjoyed sharing fine wines, bicycling, and retaining a truly daunting amount of trivia about everything from minor Harry Potter characters to Shakespearean works.

Joe is survived by his wife Elinor Freedman of East Dennis; son Daniel Casey of Los Angeles; twin brother Ned Casey and wife Manda of Morgantown, KY; sister Mary Casey of Cambridge; brother Michael Casey and his wife Janet of Saratoga Springs, NY; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Barbara and Mitch Wand of Boston and Dennis; and brother-in-law Bill Freedman of Dennis, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 12 at 1 o’clock at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Dennis. Family and friends are invited to visit with family at their home following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joe’s name to the Parkinson’s Support Network of Cape Cod or the charity of your choice.

We met Joe and Elinor when our son became friends with Dan in third grade. They were best friends and although they went to different high schools they ended up at Tufts together, living next door to each other sophomore year. My son traveled with Joe, Elinor & Dan on a cruise to Italy & Greece. I am so very sad for your loss. You were a loving intelligent family and I hope that your memories of Joe will provide some comfort as you both travel down the path of grief. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help in any way.
Love, Mary, Robert & Andrew Vincent

Joe was such a dynamo at Arlington High, always busy, always joking, always running around the school. He loved teaching and loved "the kids." He took good care of them. He was smart and worked hard . That is why he continued his career through school systems to the top-job. Congrats to him. Don & I remember Joe & Ellie's wedding, a great celebration for a great couple.
We are sorry that he suffered with his illness, and we extend our deep condolences to Ellie, Daniel and family.

I am saddened to hear of Joe Casey’s passing. I was hired by Joe in 2007 as the ETF at Melrose High School. He was so kind and helpful during my transition. Every morning he would bring something from D’Amici’s after his morning run. When I broke my ankle, he would bring something to me AND serve me coffee. He was a remarkable superintendent. His door was always open for any staff that wanted to talk. My sincerest condolences Laurel Hickey

Dearest Ellie and Dan,
I am saddened to hear that Joe has passed. He was my good friend at AHS and how excited I was to see him finish his career as the Superintendent of the Melrose Schools. Loved his laugh and sense of humor. He was a great guy. He always had time to make me laugh before going into his room next door. The kids loved him because every one of them knew that he loved them, whether they got A's or not! I'll be thinking about him and you guys. God bless you. Nanci
