Born on May 25, 1949, in Willimantic, CT, Paul grew up in Newton, MA, where he proudly became a devoted and avid fan of the Red Sox, the Celtics, Patriots, and anything else Boston held dear. He had a deep passion for sports, particularly excelling in baseball and swimming. He had a deep love for his family, for music—especially the sounds of the 60s—and for the poetry he wrote that became one of his life’s great joys.
A graduate of Newton South High School, Paul went on to earn his PhD in Spanish Literature from the University of Massachusetts. He spent many years sharing his passion for language and culture as a Spanish professor and high school teacher. A devout Catholic, Paul found joy in singing with several church choirs over the years, including the choir at St. Pius X Church.
In his later years, Paul lived at Maplewood Senior Living in Brewster, MA, where he formed many close friendships. There, he continued doing what he loved—teaching Spanish and Italian, writing poetry, and bringing warmth and encouragement to residents and staff alike.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Frank G. Erba and Zenaide Ruffolo Erba of Newton, MA, and by his brother, Richard L. Erba.
He is survived by his sisters, Diana A. Erba of Dennis, MA, and Naide Erba Bransfield (Neil) of Centerville, MA; his former wife, Susan Smith Erba of Shreveport, LA; and their sons, Paul F. Erba, Jr. of Shreveport, LA, and David M. Erba of New York.
Paul’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the friends and staff at Maplewood Senior Living and Continuum Hospice for the friendship, kindness, and the extraordinary care he received in his final years.
Services will be announced at a later date. Paul’s family asks that you consider a donation in his memory to Our Lady of the Cape Church, 468 Stony Brook Rd., Brewster, MA 02631.
