Rita L. Cooney

Rita Ledoux Cooney passed peacefully on January 10, 2017, six days shy of her 94th birthday. She was born in Woonsocket, RI on January 16, 1923 to the late Hormidas & Corinne Ledoux, as one of six children.

She is predeceased by her husband, William H. Cooney of fifty-seven years of marriage and daughter, Corinne M. Cooney. She is survived by her 3 children, daughter Constance Shaw and husband Jeffrey of Cummaquid; son Christopher and wife Dyanne of East Dennis; and daughter Mary Ann, of Pembroke. She also leaves behind grandchildren: Jeffrey and wife Elisa of West Yarmouth; Sara Cooney and fiancé Drew Shaw of Amesbury; Brian Cooney and wife Jayna of Hingham; and great granddaughters Eliana and Elizabeth.

Rita graduated high school in 1931, and then went on to work for the Internal Revenue Service shortly after. Once married, she raised four children in Cranston, RI and Cape Cod, MA. After raising her family, she decided to continue her education, and at the age of 59, she graduated with an Associates Degree from Cape Cod Community College.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Cape for forty years and an advocate for children with disabilities and Al-Anon.

She enjoyed the beach, tennis, and golf, but above all, she enjoyed the time spent with her family.

Wake services are to be held at Doane Beal & Ames Friday, March 3rd at 4:00-6:00pm and Mass @ Our Lady of the Cape Saturday, March 4th at 11:00am.
