

Dr. Thomas W. Fox, 88, of Amherst and Yarmouthport, retired Head of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, passed away at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke on September 3, 2011. He was born March 21, 1923 in Pawtucket, Mass, the son of the late Thomas M. and May (Walton) Fox, loving brother of Margery Fox Babbitt (Ray Babbitt), and graduated from Attleboro High School (’40).
Dr. Fox was married 63 years to Jean Manning Fox and has two daughters: Cynthia Fox (Stephan Berrick) of Brewster, Sandra Fox, (Patrick Sullivan) of Santa Cruz, CA, dear friend Margaret Cook of Cary, N.C., four grandchildren: Jenny F-M Wagner, (David Wagner) of Willow Glen, CA, Jacob Berrick (Jennifer Berrick) of New York, N.Y., Arielle Berrick and Benjamin Berrick of Brewster.
Dr. Fox served in the First Cavalry, 7th Regiment, World War II, earning the Combat Infantryman Badge, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars, and was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was also an Army Bandsman, playing the trombone at the official ceremony of Japan’s surrender.
Dr. Fox received a BS (’49), and MS (‘50) from UMass, and a PhD (’53) from Purdue University. He was a Professor and head of the Department of Poultry Science (‘54-’64) and Department Head of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (’64-‘79). He published many research articles in poultry genetics and was a member of many professional science organizations.
Dr. Fox was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener, card player and woodworker who greatly enjoyed friends, family and good conversation. He had a quick wit and a generous heart which endeared him to all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visitation will be held at Doane, Beal and Ames, 729 Route 134, S. Dennis from 1 pm to 2 pm on Thursday, September 8, followed by his committal service with military honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 3 pm.
