

Darrell was born in New Rockford, ND to Arthur and Olga Anderson on February 28, 1938. He graduated from Minot State University in North Dakota and went on to earn his Masters of Science at the University of Utah. He married Karen Klingenstein on August 27th, 1965 in Hannover, North Dakota.
Darrell devoted more than three decades of his life serving as a teacher, coach and mentor, whose influence reached far beyond the basketball court and classroom, shaping the lives of those he touched. He began his career as an educator and coach at New Salem High School in North Dakota. After getting his masters, he took a teaching and coaching position at Winnemucca High School in Nevada. He then returned to North Dakota to teach and coach at North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton, followed by 7 years at North Dakota State University at Williston. The majority of his career was then spent at Valley City State University as athletic director, coach and teacher. During his career, he received multiple awards, recognizing his accomplishments. After retiring from VCSU, he resided with his wife in Minneapolis, MN, before settling down in Bolivia, NC, where he spent the last 20 years of his life. Darrell was an active member of the church and community where he resided. His faith in Jesus Christ continued to grow stronger throughout his life, and his commitment to integrity never wavered.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bruce Anderson of Boise, Idaho.
Darrell is survived by his wife Karen and their three children. Eldest daughter, Kami Anderson; Justin Anderson and his wife Gina and their four daughters Ella, Abby, Lily and Mia; Jada Anderson and her husband Paul Gripka. Also surviving Darrell are his two sisters Karen Grimm of Lake Oswego, Oregon and Gail Steele of Fargo, North Dakota. Additionally, Darrell is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was a loving father and grandfather and a faithful husband who will be remembered for his fierce loyalty, patriotism, and commitment to doing what was right.
A celebration of Life will be held in the First Baptist Church of Shallotte, NC at 4486 Main Street on January 24, 2026 at 2:00 pm.
