Dave was a kind, creative, gentle soul who loved people and sampled life widely. Born in Oak Park, Illinois and raised in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California, he explored many professions in multiple places: teenage ice cream scooper at Farrell’s restaurant; skycap business owner in Aspen, Colorado; and engaging, attentive waiter in numerous California restaurants. Gifted with his hands and visionary in imagining spaces (if he didn’t know, he could figure it out!), Dave found his fit in the building trades. He spent the bulk of his career as a general contractor in Grover Beach, California, imagining and building beautiful things.
Dave and wife Lois spent many happy years in Grover Beach before moving to Southport to be closer to Lois’ family. With sister-in-law Jacci, they helped Dave’s mother-in-law, Maxine Taylor, gently out of this life last year.
Besides Lois, Dave leaves behind: sister-in-law Jacqueline Stone and family; siblings Susan Hughes and family, Liz Sloan (Cal) and family, Jim Hughes (Kerry) and family; stepmother Beverly Hughes; cousin Richard Barrow (Carolyn) and family; and other extended family. Legions of friends are also mourning the loss of their kindhearted buddy. Dave was preceded in death by mother Jeanne Serwe Hughes, father N. Wayne Hughes, and mother-in-law Maxine Taylor.
As Dave requested no formal services, we ask that family and friends raise a toast to this bright spirit, and remember him in their own special way.
