

He was known for his crooked steam pipe and had managed the Long Beach Pier from 1967 till it was closed. Born in Fayetteville on November 5, 1930 to his loving parents; he had a brother and two sisters. He graduated from Southport High School and had worked for Frito Lay Company for several years before settling down in Oak Island to manage the pier which was his passion. After his retirement he continued with his hobby of repairing rods and reels. In September of 2013, Jim suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on his left side, he fought hard to get better each day. Jim loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing.
Survivors include his three sons, Darryl Ratcliffe and his fiancé Cathy Gaddy of Winnabow, Donnie Ratcliffe and wife Robin of Bolivia, David Ratcliffe of Oak Island; a daughter Dyan Ratcliffe Beynon and husband Gil of Titusville, Florida; and numerous grand and great-grandchildren.
The family will have a memorial visitation gathering on Thursday, September 15, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service in Southport.
Remember Jim each time you see the ocean as it was his love.
