Rev. John Hugh Brooks

Rev. Brooks was born August 6, 1927, in Indiana the son of the late Paul and Frieda Brooks. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served in WWII. After serving 13 years in the Navy he opened and operated his own barber shop in Norfolk and Fairfax, VA. Rev. Brooks served over 50 years in the ministry. He pastored churches in Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, and North Carolina.

Rev. Brooks pastored Shell Point Baptist Church until four years ago, retiring at the age of 84. He loved fishing and sitting on the waterfront watching the people and boats go by. Rev. Brooks enjoyed cooking and everyone loved his special recipe barbecue. For the past 11 years, John enjoyed the love and special times with his close friend Erma Lou Tatum.

He was preceded in death by a son Hugh J. Brooks, two brothers Bernie Brooks and William Dale Brooks, two sisters, Maxine Brinson and Juanita Pribble and a granddaughter Bambi J. Brooks.

Survivors include his two sons, John Roger Brooks and wife Carol of Woodstock, VA, and Billy Dale Brooks of Southport; three daughters, Suanne Brooks of Leland, Deborah Jones and husband Steve of Inverness, FL, and Anita Barreotis and husband John of Valdosta, GA; a sister Sharon Taul of Versailles, IN; eleven grandchildren, Jason Brooks, Jeremy Brooks, Tracey Marker, JoAnna DesFonds, Michael Hugh Brooks, Christopher Hugh Brooks, Bradford Hugh Brooks, Daniel Hugh Brooks, James Robertson, Stacey Robertson, and Amber Barreotis; six great-grandchildren, Lauren Coleman, Justin Morrison, Mason DesFonds, Caleb DesFonds, Callie Brooks, and Sophie Brooks.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, November 2, 2015, at Shell Point Baptist Church with Reverend Larry Milligan, Reverend Foyd Bennett, and Reverend Steve Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
