John, christened Ioannis Nikolaos Dimopoulos, was born October 15, 1934, in the country of Greece. When John was but six years of age, his village was attacked by German Nazis causing the dispersal of families fleeing for safety. John, along with other children, were separated from his parents. He recalled walking miles, hiding, stowing away on a boat and even eating grass in order to survive. Over time his family was once again reunited.
At age 17, John had the opportunity to come to the United States to work for an uncle in Georgia. Coming through immigration, his name was shortened and his life would be forever changed. His new life in Georgia was difficult. It was during this time the great earthquake in Greece occurred, and John was told his family did not survive.
Coming of age, John enlisted in the military where he gained a better command of the English language and learned a trade. After leaving the military, John set out on his own and eventually settled in North Carolina where he met his first love, Mollie Stewart. They were married, and together, raised three children - Jimmy, David and Kathy.
John worked for Ford Garage and later owned a garage business of his own. Sharing a zest for life, he and Mollie often traveled the country on the back of a motorcycle. He enjoyed fishing, finding treasures at yard sales and tinkering with small engines.
In the late 90’s, John discovered he had living family in Greece when his brother found him through the internet. John was able to travel to his home country of Greece where his mother and brothers and sisters were there to greet him.
John had a deep love for God and worshipped at Town Creek Baptist Church.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie; his daughter, Kathy; his parents, Nikolaos and Katerina Dimopoulos; and his brothers, Jimmy and Christos.
Those left to mourn his loss are his sons, David and wife, Ubolwadee (Tuey) and Jim Tucker, and wife, Beverly; a grandson, Nick Tacker; his sisters, Soula Palouras, Effie Tsipas, and Maria Bouis; a nephew, Nick Dimopoulos and wife, Melissa; his dear friend, Edie Walls; his friend and care provider, John Best; and a host of friends and family too numerous to mention by name.
Most live their lives simply but, without a doubt, John Demos lived a life worthy of written word and full of God’s infinite grace.
We will celebrate this life on June 27, 2021, at 4 p.m. at Town Creek Baptist Church in Winnabow, North Carolina.
