
He was born in Saugerties on September 11, 1944, the son of the Rev. Arien L. and Charity Irwin Mills. He graduated from Saugerties High School and attended Ulster County Community College and Albany State University. He was employed by the NY State Department of Taxation & Finance and Davis Vision. He had resided in Schenectady and Sloansville before relocating to North Carolina in 2015.
He will be remembered for his athletic ability—playing basketball, football, and baseball in high school and in local leagues after he graduated. He was a talented pitcher and was picked to try out with the San Francisco Giants. He was a member of several Baptist churches during his lifetime. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his first wife, Sylvia Wing Mills; a daughter Jerelyn Hesch (Eric) of Charleston, NY; a son, Jared Mills (Jessie) of Springfield, OH; ten grandchildren: Morgan Johnson (Ryan) of Platte City, MO; Skyler Mosteller (Jimmy) of Gardner, MA; Ryleigh Hesch of Cortland, NY; Eric II, Regan, and Kolton Hesch of Charleston; Walker, Lindsay, Hannah, and Olivia Mills of Springfield, OH; four great-grandchildren: Eyerly, Emmerson, Jeremy, and Henry Johnson of Platte City, MO; a sister, Gretchen Maresco, of Niverville; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Mary Anne Lindsay of Saugerties.
There are no services. A celebration of his life will be held near Christmas at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Ames, NY.
