Surviving is his wife Frances Morio Vietmeyer (Francie), two stepsons Geoff Hermance and wife Zeneida and their son River, and Scott Hermance; a sister Jean Churchill and her husband Tom and their daughters Kim (husband Matt and sons Will and Henry) and Kate (husband Adam and sons Jack and Charlie).
Phil was born January 29, 1939 in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin and is the son of Henry and Margaret Reinhart Vietmeyer. He was a 1962 graduate of Roanoke College in Salem, VA.
He served five years as a Lieutenant in the US Navy as a helicopter pilot; having graduated from Naval Aviation Training in Pensacola, Florida. Phil was hired by Eastern Airlines in 1968 where he later earned the rank of Captain and flew with them until the airline shut down. He later flew 747 cargo aircraft all over the world for Atlas Airlines until his retirement.
While flying, Phil enjoyed many ski trips out West with his pilot buddies, many of whom lived near him in Rowayton, CT. He loved coaching his sons in both Little League baseball and soccer. Phil and Francie enjoyed spending time at Bromley Mountain in Vermont where he skied with his sons and driving with Francie across to Maine to eat fried clams and “lobsta”.
In 2006, he moved with his wife, Francie, from Rowayton to St. James, where he liked being near the water, riding the waves on Oak Island, playing tennis, biking, and spending time with his many friends.
He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed people, as they did him; he especially adored his devoted wife, sons, family and supportive neighbors.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 2, 2015 in the St. James Chapel. Fellowship with the family will follow at Waterway Park.
