Richard A. Herrett (known to all as Dick), 84, passed away peacefully at his home in St. James on July 26, 2017. Dick was born on August 4, 1932 in Buffalo, NY and lived in several places before retiring to North Carolina 6 ½ years ago. He and his wife, Joan, relocated from Severna Park, MD where they lived for 23 years. He was always a good storyteller with an upbeat attitude who could be seen out walking even while undergoing treatments for the lung cancer that eventually took him from us.
Dick graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ in 1954 with a BS in Chemistry and from the University of Minnesota in 1957 with a PhD in Biochemistry. In his early student life at Rutgers he played football, but he soon found his first love in sports was the Rutgers wrestling team where he proudly wrestled for the Scarlet Knights during his undergraduate years. Dick remained an avid sports enthusiast throughout his life, with special affection for the Washington Capitals’ Hockey team.
He worked with several companies before becoming a Director of Research Development for ICI, (headquartered in England with facilities throughout the United States, including one in Goldsboro, NC). In retirement, he continued to contribute to the world of research through his consulting business.
In addition to his wife of almost 39 years, Dick is survived by his sons Maxwell of Annapolis, MD (Sarah), Jeffrey of Sneads Ferry, NC (Kristen and grandchildren Shelby, Joseph and William), Steven of Goldsboro, NC, and Bill of Wilmington, NC (Wendy and grandson Cooper) He will also be missed by his brother-in-law Ken and sister-in-law Cheryl Maurer of Selbyville, DE and their children. Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Ron Herrett.
Dick loved to travel. Family and friends can always share a riotous vacation story about a trip with Dick and Joan. He had a pure love of living, whether golfing, playing bridge or relaxing with a good book. But most of all, Dick's world revolved around Joan, his family and his beloved Golden Retrievers. His life was full, and he touched the lives of so many. He will truly be missed.
