With broken hearts, we announce that Richard Edward James passed away on September 18, 2025. He was born on August 29, 1970, in Newcastle, Delaware. Though born in Delaware, he spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Massachusetts, which Rich always considered his true hometown.
After attending Ashland High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he found his true calling in life, serving with SDVT SEAL Team 4. His service was distinguished not only by the uniform he wore, but by the many honors he earned. Rich was tremendously skilled, earning Sharpshooter qualifications in both pistol and rifle marksmanship—a reflection of his precision, discipline, and calmness under pressure. While the Navy moved him and his family to several states, Virginia Beach, Virginia became their long-time home for many years.
After his honorable discharge from the United States Navy, Rich began a new journey in civilian life as a carpenter. Starting from the ground up building decks and sheds, he eventually discovered his specialty in trim work. His craftsmanship, dedication, and work ethic led him to Southport, North Carolina, where he built a successful business and earned a strong reputation over many years.
Rich was a man of many talents and interests, always reading books and how-to guides. From playing the guitar, chess, and jiu-jitsu, to making homemade bread, canning foods, and all things survival preparation, he was a vessel of knowledge and always willing to teach anyone wanting to listen.
As time passed, Rich sought a quieter life. He retired from carpentry and found joy in simpler things—gardening, hunting, camping, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Though Rich was an independent man who lived life on his own terms and blazed his own trail through the world, those fortunate enough to be welcomed into his circle knew a good man. He was a father, brother, son, friend, and an amazing “Pappy” to his grandchildren.
Rich is survived by his daughters; Brittany Monroe and Renee Rufo. He left this world far too soon, his absence is felt by all who knew and loved him. A laugh we will forever miss hearing, hugs that squeezed your heart, advice we will carry on, memories we will hold tight. He was one of a kind and will be forever remembered and deeply missed.
A private memorial will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.
