He was born in Westerly, Rhode Island in 1941 and was the son of the late John and Annie Gavitt. After serving four years in the United States Air Force, Tom was employed at General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division in Groton, Connecticut until his retirement in 2005. At that time, he and his wife Susan relocated from Stonington, Connecticut to Bolivia, North Carolina.

His sense of humor, generosity, and patriotism endeared him to many. He was a kind and gentle soul who was dearly loved by his family.
Tom is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan; his daughter, Audrey and husband, Fred; his granddaughter, Madison; his brother, David and wife Ruby; and several nieces and nephew. He was predeceased by his sister, Martha and his parents.
