

He was born in Surrey County, North Carolina on July 26, 1946.
Tom graduated from Appalachian State University. He is a veteran of the US Army and was employed as a Veterans Employment Representative by the North Carolina Employment Security Commission from 1972 to 1994, and was an ESC office manager for Surrey and Yadkin counties from 1994 to 2005. Tom taught business courses at Mitchell Community College in Statesville, North Carolina for nine years.
Tom always had a great interest in playing tennis and when he and his wife retired to Southport, North Carolina, he became involved with the tennis community and enjoyed playing his favorite game with them. Tom loved teaching tennis to children in Southport and stringing tennis rackets. He was best friends with all of his tennis buddies and all of his neighbors. He and his wife leased space and sold antiques in Northrop‘s Antique Mall in Southport for 11 years.
Tom was always busy, always happy, and very positive, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by parents, Detreville and Margaret Carter; and identical twin brother, Michael Carter.
He is survived by his wife; Pat; sons, Jason and David; stepsons, Dean, Kevin, Jonathan and Matthew; six grandchildren; his sister, Carolyn Smith; and sister-in-law, Nancy Fisher.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, at Peacock Newman and White Funeral Home in Southport.
A burial service will be May 1 at 12:30 p.m. at the Veterans National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, where his father, a Navy veteran, is also buried.
