John Johnston

John was born July 9, 1940 in Summit, NJ, to Patrick and Elizabeth (Edwards) Johnston. A 1958 graduate of Summit High School where he was a member of the 1956 and 1957 Group 3 Championship Boys Soccer Teams. After High School John enlisted in the US Army, earning the good conduct medal. After his discharge in 1961, John worked for Sentry Insurance in the credit department, as a buyer for Two Guys Department Store and as a sales representative for Hudson-Berlind. After retiring from full time employment, John returned to work in the deli department at the ShopRite in Succasunna, New Jersey.

John enjoyed many different activities in his free time. He enjoyed bowling, watching Yankees Baseball and tennis, sudoku, reading, westerns, M*A*S*H, wine and birdwatching. After his retirement, he visited all 30 Major League Baseball Parks and a myriad of zoos. John was also involved with Troop 111 in Jefferson Township as Troop Committee Chairman and with the Jefferson Sports League and a coach. In 1969, John and his wife Nancy moved to the Lake Shawnee neighborhood of Jefferson Township where he served as Club Vice President in 1973 and 1974.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Nancy Hamilton, son John, Jr of Des Moines, Iowa, son and daughter-in-law Tim and Pat of Austin, Texas and granddaughter Rocio, also of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Michael in 2008, his parents, seven brothers and a sister.

Visitation for John will be on Friday, October 20th from 4 – 8PM at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta, NJ. A prayer service will be held at 10:30AM on Saturday, October 21st, at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow at Sparta Cemetery.
