Richard Jay Schmidt, 54, of Sparta, NJ passed away on March 27, 2012. Richard was born in Teaneck, NJ and lived in Sparta the past 24 years. He was a 1976 graduate of New Milford High School and then he became a proud member of the US Navy, serving 4 years. Richard was a member of the Sparta Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Chief in 2003. He was the former Vice President of Machine Services in Paterson, NJ. Richard is survived by his beloved daughters: Lyndsay, Alyssa, and Lauren; brother of Barbara O’Shea and her husband Jim, Debra Horstmann and her husband Ralph; Robert Schmidt and his wife Grace and Raymond Schmidt and his wife Maureen. He is also survived by 2 nieces, 3 nephews, 2 grandnephews and 2 grandnieces. A memorial service will be held at 11:30am Saturday, March 31, 2012 at the Sparta Volunteer Fire Department, 141 Woodport Rd., Sparta, NJ 07871. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to the Sparta Volunteer Fire Dept, 141 Woodport Rd., Sparta, NJ 07871. The Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta is in charge of arrangements.
