

Bill was born on August 5, 1939, in Bogota, New Jersey. He was married to JoAnn McCaffery (deceased), with whom he shared 43 years of marriage. Together, they made their home in Lincoln Park, New Jersey, where they raised their family and built a lifetime of memories. After retiring, Bill and JoAnn moved to Coconut Creek, Florida, where they enjoyed the sunshine.
Following JoAnn’s passing, Bill relocated to Sparta, New Jersey, to be closer to his daughter and her family. He lived there for nearly 20 years, cherishing time with loved ones and continuing to enjoy the outdoor activities that brought him happiness.
Bill was a devoted and loving father to his daughter, Kelly Darnsteadt, and her husband, Dale, and his son, Scott McCaffery. He was immensely proud of his cherished granddaughters, Jennifer Darnsteadt, and Ashley (Darnsteadt) Elig and her husband, Scott Elig, known lovingly as “Poppy.” Bill adored his great-granddaughter, Alyssa Elig, whom he affectionately called his “little buddy.” One of his greatest joys was hearing Alyssa’s first spoken words—calling him “Pop-Pop.” Bill was preceded by his parents John & Frances McCaffery, and siblings – Bernadine (McCaffery) Andrews, Jack McCaffery and Harold McCaffery.
Family meant everything to Bill, he enjoyed time spent with his older sister, Isabelle, along with the company of his many nieces and nephews. Bill shared a special bond with his loyal furry companion, Tara, who brought him comfort and happiness.
A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, Bill served his country with honor. He spent over 40 years as a skilled tile foreman with Local #7 Tile & Bricklayers Union in New York, a career he took great pride in.
Bill lived life fully and passionately. He enjoyed decades of motorcycle riding with the motorcycle club, “Just Us,” traveling throughout the East Coast to countless rallies. He was also an avid antique car enthusiast and took great pride in his restored Mustang and his prized 1959 Galaxie. Bill and JoAnn attended numerous antique car shows in New Jersey and Florida, including the historic Lead East Antique Car Show; where Bill proudly displayed his cars.
Bill treasured time spent with his daughter Kelly, they shared long walks at Kittatinny State Park with their dogs, Tara and Gia, along with trail biking and kayaking. He also cherished annual family vacations visiting Myrtle Beach, SC, Maine and Florida, creating lasting memories filled with laughter, togetherness, and sunshine.
Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He will be remembered for his quick wit, funny sense of humor, caring nature, and unwavering devotion to his family. His life was full, rich with love, adventure, and meaningful connections—a life truly well lived.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, January 2, 2026, from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, at Goble Funeral Home 22 Main St., Sparta, New Jersey. A service will take place at 5:15 PM.
