During World War II, Bert served his country with honor, joining the armed forces in his early 20s, and contributing to the efforts that shaped history. His service in the war exemplified his unwavering commitment to freedom and duty.
In an extraordinary turn of passion and determination, Bert became a helicopter pilot at the age of 50, defying expectations and embracing new challenges with enthusiasm. His late-blooming aviation career symbolized his lifelong pursuit of growth and his fearless embrace of new horizons.
Survived by his wife, JoAnn Manley; his niece, Jannie; and his stepdaughters, Sue, Laura, and Kathleen; as well as countless family and friends. Known for his warm smile and easy friendliness, Bert was a beloved figure at his favorite local haunt, the Maxwell House restaurant. There, he held a special place in the hearts of staff and patrons alike, he and his wife had their very own table where he would often be found enjoying his signature drink-whiskey water. Bert's legacy is one of bravery, resilience, and inspiration to all who knew him. His story reminds us that it is never too late to follow one's dreams and serve with purpose.
A memorial service will be held at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, at 10:30, on July 18, 2025, in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to veterans' organizations supporting those who have served.
