William “Bill” Curl Tubbs M.D. passed away at age 89 on February 18, 2022. He was born to Clarence George Tubbs and Lois Bill Curl-Tubbs on April 15, 1932 in Portland, Oregon. He was the youngest of four siblings; Bettebelle Ruth Tubbs-Watzek (Peter Watzek), Elaine Lucille Tubbs-Austin (Everett Austin) and Frank Clarence Tubbs (Virginia Underwood-Tubbs). Bill learned independence and gained a strong work ethic growing up in rural Eastern Oregon on a family farm in Adams, Oregon (near Pendleton). He was an accomplished athlete, enjoyed wrestling and was chosen to play football on an all state Shriner’s game in Portland. Bill was also inquisitive and a tenacious learner. He graduated from Pendleton High School as valedictorian and completed college at Oregon State University with honors. He subsequently pursued an interest in medicine and obtained his M.D. degree at the University of Oregon in 1958, finished his medical internship year in San Bernadino CA in 1959, and earned Board Certification in Radiology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN in 1962. Bill served his country as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Benning Georgia from 1962-1964. Thereafter, he and his family moved to Spokane, Washington, where he began his medical career in diagnostic radiology. In the career to follow, he showed dedication to high quality patient care and leadership within his private practice group, Spokane Radiology Consultants. He played an instrumental role in bringing newly developed advanced imaging technology (CT, MRI) to the Spokane community through his collaboration with Deaconess Hospital. He was known for having impeccable integrity and was meticulous in his work which earned him respect from peers and co-workers. Bill had an engaging smile, kind eyes and humble nature. He was enjoyed by many for his uplifting sense of humor and dry wit.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, and family man. At age 21, he married his high school sweetheart, Rosalie May Hanson, on August 12, 1953. Together they raised three children in a loving and supportive home. Bill and Rosalie were also involved in the Spokane social and philanthropic community participating in local school boards and many social service programs. They enjoyed fulfilling years together until Rosalie developed pancreatic cancer at age 58. Bill was devoted to Rosalie’s care and well-being during that difficult time of illness until her death at age 60. Bill remarried Clarinda Sara (Rodam) Tubbs on September 29, 1994, in Spokane, Washington. They spent many years together and traveled. They explored Clarinda’s native home and met with her family in Portugal and traveled to Italy, Switzerland and Mexico. Bill and Clarinda supported one another through health issues in later years until he passed away at home.
