The day after mom's services, dad's sister and cousin came over and started talking genealogy with dad and I, one of mom's passions.  In digging through her numerous files on various family branches, I found an essay she had written about her early life and I wanted to share it:

"I was born in Carson, OR in 1936.  My parents separated when I was 3 yrs old and my dad, Carl Ingram, took me to live with his parents, Harry (Robert) and Minty (Arminta) Ingram.  They had lived in the valley since before they were married in 1903.  Grandpa had a small lumber mill and a blacksmith shop. 

I have many warm memories of that time.  Grandma would take me out in the field and let me help pick dandelion greens and into the woods to gather mushrooms.  I remember the mushrooms were soaked in salt water for a time, then floured and fried.  I thought they were just the best thing.  Sometimes I would stand in the woodbox beside the stove and watch grandma cook, keeping an eye on the big pan of milk on the back of the stove to see if it was cottage cheese yet.  One of the ways to entertain a child then was to fill a big wash tub with cold water.  Then I had to wait until the sun got it warm enough to play in and I could get in.  My version of a swimming pool.  We had a cow, chickens and Shetland mare that roamed the yard like a large dog.  When I was five, I went to live with my mother.  Not long after, my grandmother died.

As I grew older, I developed a great curiosity about my dad's people and where they came from.  I wanted to know about the people and their lives, not just my memories of grandparents  It was then I developed an interest in genealogy.  When I retired from my job as Buyer for Surgical Services at KMC, I had time to do some looking at our library here in Spokane, WA, where I now live, but it didn't take long to realize I would need help and instruction.  I joined the Eastern Washington Genealogy Society.  One of the things they taught me is it's always good to go to the place where your people lived for clues. And so, one vacation, my husband and I returned to the valley.  After all those miles of brown bleak hills, he could hardly believe his eyes when we dropped down into that lovely green valley full of pine trees, and surrounded by the mountains.  It all seemed so familiar to me, even after all those years.  We were both hooked, for life, I'm sure.  We've been back every year since.

My first year back, I found Tom Ingram, whose grandfather was my grandfather's brother.  We sat around the table and he told me stories of the things he remembered about our family.  Then I found out I have another relative living in Halfway, OR, Elva Pearson, whose mother was my grandfather's sister. Though I have written to her, we have not met yet, so I'm sure we will be back next year."

Mom and dad did get to meet Elva, mom got a real kick out of meeting her, and talked of her often over the years.  She described her as a spitfire, unafraid to say what she thought and unafraid to live, very accepting and kind--just how I think of my mom.  I miss you, mom.  Love, Kimmy

Ah, sweet Carlene,
When it's my time to go, I want to be surrounded by my kids like you were.  I want my legacy to be happy kids  contributing to their family and society with their love and passions, like you have.  I want to have a niece or nephew or surrogate child make the effort to be hugging me goodbye, like you had. 

 I won't have a husband passing flower pods from my garden to keep others remembering the beauty I surrounded myself like you did; but I want someone to love me so much it matters to share the tangible memories like a double pink poppy pod -- thank you Uncle Glen.    

When it's my time to go I want someone to say, "she always made me feel welcome and warm", like you always made me feel.  I want someone to know that I believed in them and accepted them like you always did for me-- and to have that make the difference.  I don't need to be eulogized publicly in the local papers, but I hope and pray that my son or daughter will write their hearts  deepest wishes and memories, like Tim has written for you.

When it's time  to go I hope someone can stand up and say, she was a survivor and  a champion to those who needed it most, and she make me smile, like I am sure they will say for you...  like I want to say," Carlene, you  made me smile" but I am not so good in public, but I want to go on record - Carlene, you made me smile.

Ah sweet Aunt Carlene   did I ever let you know what you meant to me?  In my rebellious and somewhat troubled youth, did you know I always completely trusted that you were family for me and would help me reel myself back in if I only asked.  Did I let you know that you inspired me to be that anchor for someone else.

My heart was breaking to see you in pain, but even though I will probably cry at services, my heart will be soaring in joy knowing you are free and seeing all the wonderful beauty you have left for the rest of us now that you are free.  I  loved you Carlene, and I will love you forever.

Such a beautiful light, always full of fun and adventure. My deepest sympathy to her family and loved ones.

I had more fun going out with mom and dad than I did with my friends.  She would dance him under the table and then go to work on my.
I could easily turn this into a book..suffice to say 'loved by all'

I met Carline through genealogy research of my husband's Great Grandmother, Lydia Petersson. Lydia was Carline's maternal aunt. We talked and became friends. We added each other on Facebook. She even mailed me copies of some genealogy paperwork and pictures she had. Carline was a beautiful, caring, funny woman. Her kindness and friendship will not be forgotten. My husband and I send our deepest sympathy to the family during this difficult time. Our hearts and prayers go out to you.

God bless and deepest sympathy for her surviving friends and family....my thoughts are with Kim and Martin O'Connor and pray for their continued strength.

Carlene, you always welcomed me with open arms; whether it was that two hour wait in Everett on my bus trip home to Wenatchee, or at Mom's funeral when you came because I begged you.  You and Glen popped in on  me and the kids in Albion and Pullman just because you were in the area and kept me updated on your kids. I always felt your love and continued caring for me and mine.  Thank you.

My thoughts are with you all! Especially Glen, my dear friend Jenny and my buddy Jesse! Hugs and kisses, you know I'll be thinking of you all Saturday.
