John Morgan Lewis, 78, of Rockford, WA passed away at home on September 27, 2019, after a long battle with heart failure and lung disease. He was surrounded with loving family and caregivers.

John was born on August 11, 1941, in Rock Springs, WY, and grew up in small towns in Wyoming and Montana, where his mother Rose was a rural school teacher. After graduating high School in Belfry, MT, John enlisted in military service at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL. During his years of service John was given the honor of Serviceman of the Month in the Electronics and Communications Department by his commanding officer. After leaving the Navy, John earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. John’s engineering career included working for General Electric in Erie, PA, for four years. After relocating to Spokane, John eventually spent 30 years as Chief Electrical Engineer at the Kaiser Aluminum rolling mill. John spent his retirement giving copious amounts of time to his children and grandchildren.

The family, including relatives and friends, enjoyed 15 years boating and fishing at Lake Pend Oreille. He also loved, cooking, golf, woodworking, and landscaping; caring for his rural 18-acre property. He skillfully groomed numerous fruit and decorative trees and built two year-round outdoor koi ponds with cascading waterfalls. He always shared his keen sense of humor with everyone. John and Kay would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on November 13, 2019.

John is survived by his loving wife Kay, and two daughters, April Engel, San Antonio, TX, and Lisa Lewis, Seattle, WA. His grandchildren Taylor, Courtney and Ryan Engel currently reside in Texas. John is also survived by his two younger brothers, David in Billings, MT, and Gary in Evergreen, CO. Brilliant, happy, kind and generous, his presence will be forever missed by his loving family and friends. A memorial service for John will be held on Friday, October 11, 3pm, at Hazen & Jaeger Valley funeral home, 1306 N Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA 99206. Dearest Auntie KK and family,
My deepest condolences to all of you.
I will always remember Uncle John's sense of humor. I'll always remember the time we visited and went boating and fishing, and how he would magically pick Shawn and I up by our ears. I will always appreciate Uncle John's ability to lighten my dad's concerns. Though I wasn't able to spend much time with him, he made a great impact on me and on my family. I will miss him.
Love to you all.

~ I mostly recall the love and kindness he could so easily express to his wife and my two cousins April and Lisa ~
... and of course to me~!!
I also recall how he could sometimes lovingly tease my dad~ ‘like any big brother might do’ .. which I remember thinking was scary (I recall thinking “who can talk to my dad like that?”) ... and later as I grew older I could tell that he had a special way of helping my dad laugh sometimes when he seemed a little stressed about something ~
I have always secretly been Greatful in my heart because I know uncle John played such a big part in taking care of my dad and looking after him when they were all just boys and going through some very hard times growing up together…
I especially remember this gift he had for making me laugh the last time I was blessed to spend time with him when he and auntie Kay came for my brother Shawn’s wedding~
He had me in stitches simply joking about random things as we drove from the airport ~
He always exuded a relaxed confident nature that would put me fast at ease~
I so regret we were so far apart in distance since I was young and I missed the opportunity to enjoy my Uncle more over the years since.

There is and always will be a special place in my heart for you~
Love and miss you Uncle John~
Your loving first nephew ~ Stewy

Being the eldest of my siblings I’m the luckiest as I had the most time around my dear Uncle John~
I recall how he was always so light hearted and fun, even quite playful. He would tease and make me laugh~ like when he would tell me my eyes were going to shrivel up and fall out of my head if I kept watching cartoons sitting with my nose up against the TV~

~I mostly remember uncle John being gracious and generous ~ and having this special way of making me laugh at things~!! ...
Uncle John would sometimes do things that I found so so unusual and funny as a young kid…
~ One particular thing that really sticks out in my mind was the way he would steer a car when drive long-distances ~
He would cross his arms, one on top of the other, across the top of the wheel and lean forward as if he were looking for something no one else could see~ just rocking the wheel back and forth tapping his elbows to the music with his fingers as we rolled down the highway ~ I thought this was the funniest way to drive.... and now I find myself doing the exact same thing when I am cruising down the highway~! I literally Always smile and think of my Uncle John whenever I do this~! More to come ~~>

John was quick witted and kind hearted. What we remember most about John was his love and devotion to his wife, Kay. He will remain in our hearts.
