From a young age, Robert demonstrated a remarkable work ethic and adventurous spirit. At just 14 years old, he began operating heavy equipment in Minnesota - a testament to his determination and capability. His early start laid the foundation for a life filled with diverse experiences and hard-earned accomplishments.
At the age of 20, Robert answered the call to serve his country. He joined the United States Army on December 29, 1954, during the Korean conflict. Assigned to an elite unit stationed in the mountains of West Germany, he played a critical role in intelligence operations monitoring Russian activity. His service was marked by courage and dedication until his honorable discharge on December 9, 1957.
Following his military service, Robert pursued a wide-ranging and industrious career. He worked as an ironworker and long-haul truck driver before turning his love for the outdoors into a profession as an outfitter in Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own contracting business. Later in life, he worked closely with Amish communities in Indiana, providing transportation services - another example of his adaptability and willingness to lend a hand where needed.
Robert's life was rich not only in work but also in passions that brought joy and peace. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed time on the green as much as he did casting a line or tracking game through the woods. Fishing and hunting were lifelong pursuits that connected him deeply to nature and offered moments of reflection and camaraderie.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: son Robert (Robin) of Gold Bar, Washington; son Gene (Melissa) of Mesquite, Nevada; son Daren of Minnesota; and daughter Memoree of California. Step son Shannon (Kelly) of Spokane, Washington. His legacy continues through numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry forward his strength and resilience. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews who will cherish their memories of him.
Robert was preceded in death by his father Rowland, mother Irene, brother Buck, and sister Joyce.
Those who knew Robert will remember him as a man of grit and heart - someone who lived fully through hard work, service to others, love for family, and appreciation for the natural world. His presence will be missed dearly and remembered always in our hearts.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
