Spending his childhood on the Reservation, he attended grade school there, where he met his future wife, on March 2, 1945 at the Ford School, and eventually graduating from Springdale High School. After graduating, he moved to Spokane, where he attended Telegraphy school, then he went on to work for Union Pacific Railroad.

While in Spokane, they had 3 children, then moved to Marengo outside of Ritzville, where Tommy continued working for the railroad at night, and attended Eastern Washington State College during the day. They had their fourth child. After graduating with an accounting degree, Tommy got a job with the IRS and moved the family to Kennewick, for 4 years, then to Federal Way for another 4 years, before moving back to Spokane in 1975, where they have resided, ever since. He retired on December 31, 1995.
Tommy loved spending time out at Tum Tum on the Spokane RIver, water skiing and teaching others how to, as well. Tommy stayed involved in sports between playing, coaching his children and grandchildren, and watching and supporting his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.
