Today we gather in gratitude for the life of Aaron Edgar Porter—a man of quiet strength, gentle wisdom, and unwavering love. Known affectionately as “Papa Grande” (and sometimes “The Weather Man”), Aaron was a steady presence everyone looked forward to seeing. He was calm in spirit, generous with his time, and rich in love for family and friends.
Aaron proudly served his country in the United States Army for over sixteen years, including service during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He carried the values of discipline, honor, and commitment throughout his life, living them daily as a father, husband, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
Family was the heart of Aaron’s life. He was a devoted father who poured into his children with patience, guidance, and unconditional love. He was a joyful and caring grandfather, whose presence brought comfort and laughter. His love extended to his sister, nieces, nephews, and all the relatives who cherished his counsel and companionship.
Later in life, Aaron found enduring love again and shared more than seventeen beautiful years with his wife, Olga. Their life together was marked by companionship, mutual devotion, and deep affection. She was a blessing in his life, and their bond reflected gratitude, tenderness, and shared faith.
Aaron was a man among men—quietly strong, gentle in character, and easygoing in nature. His frequent, contagious laugh made him a favorite among family and friends, and his presence brought a sense of peace to all who knew him.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: good music—especially jazz, meaningful conversations, laughter around a game of dominoes, and time spent with those he loved. His smile and warmth left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Above all, Aaron loved God and trusted Him completely. In his final days, God granted him the gift of time—to speak love, to hear it spoken back, and to rest in the assurance of faith. Though our hearts ache, we take comfort knowing his voice, his laughter, and his love will live on in us.
“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life.”
—James 1:12
