Gilbert Alfred Rogers, affectionately known as "Gilly," passed away on July 27, 2024, in Brooksville, Florida, at the age of 88. Born on July 5, 1936, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Gilly lived a life full of love, adventure, and dedication to his family and community.
Gilly was a beloved father to his children Kenneth Rogers, Linda Perry, Brenda Ballard, and Jeffrey Rogers. He is also survived by his half-siblings, Karen Vilandry and Charles Rodriques, as well as his nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife Bella (Bettencourt) Rogers, his mother Josephine (Viera) Oliver, his father Domingo Rogers, and his brothers Raymond and Richard Rogers.
A highly respected scallop fisherman and fishing boat captain, Gilly made his mark on the waters of New Bedford, the North Atlantic, and Georges Bank. He captained several vessels, including the F/V Mariner and F/V Jupiter, and he proudly owned and captained the F/V Andrea Jean and the F/V Harmony. His expertise and leadership were well-known, and he was admired for his hard work and dedication to his craft.
Outside of his career, Gilly had a passion for cooking and cherished the moments spent with his family. He especially loved being surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating lasting memories that will be treasured by all who knew him. Gilly's great sense of humor, generosity, and larger-than-life personality endeared him to everyone he met.
Though no official services are being scheduled, the family invites those who knew and loved Gilly to remember him in their hearts and share stories that celebrate his remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation in his memory to a charity of your choice.
Gilly's legacy of love, laughter, and strength will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
