
Frances Melamed, born February 15, 1921 passed peacefully on April 12th, 2022 at the Jewish Family Home in Rockleigh, NJ. Frances is survived by her children Lynn Jaron and Larry Melamed, grandchildren Stefanie Hest, Allyson Haas, Jason Melamed and Taryn Mazzuca and her beloved great grandchildren, Rebecca and Ethan Hest, Caleb Haas, Daniel Melamed and Lucas and Alexander Mazzuca.
The youngest of seven children born to Abraham and Sarah Sperber, she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brooklyn College. After marrying Monte Melamed, Frances moved to Rockland County, NY where she and Monte raised a family in Pearl River. Monte served as Executive Director of the Henry Kaufman Campground while Frances used her degree as an educator at the George Miller School in Nanuet until her retirement.
Frances was an active member of both the Nanuet Hebrew Center and the Jewish community. She served as a member of the Board of Directors for the NHC Sisterhood and was an active participant in their Book Club, Journal Committee and Israel Bonds Committee. She also served on the board of both the Rockland Center for Holocaust Studies and the Women’s Division of Israel Bonds for which she Chaired the Fashion Show and Sponsor Functions receiving honors for her dedicated service. Frances was also a member of the Rockland Jewish Community Center and the Rockland Chapter of Brandeis Women.
Ever devoted to the betterment of the greater community, Frances also gave of her time as a Facilitator for the Institute for Senior Education at Rockland Community College and as a Volunteer Administrator for Planned Parenthood of Rockland County.
Upon husband Monte’s passing in 1989, she spent winters in Delray Beach, where she was active in the Palm Greens tennis league and swim clubs, enjoyed cultural activities from the Mizner and Kravitz Centers and attended classes with friends at Florida Atlantic University.
Frances is predeceased by her brothers Joseph and Bernard Sperber and sisters Lilian and Ruth Sperber and Helen Becker.
A private ceremony will be held by the family on Thursday, April 14th.
