He was raised in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Manhattan Beach. As a teen preparing to enter high school, an uncle who held a prominent position with the New York State Education System introduced Fein to the School of Aviation Trades. Fein said his experience at SAT has benefited him throughout his entire life. He completed his education at Syracuse University.
In 1944, he entered the service until 1946, functioning as an aircraft engineer for the United States Navy during World War II as part of the Naval Air Corps, now known as Naval Aviation. He was stationed in the Panama Canal.
Frederick was predeceased by his wife Monica and daughter Jill. He is survived by daughter Pam, sons Larry and Jason, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
“My proudest accomplishment was taking ownership and successfully operating a ski resort’s rental equipment concession that had not been run very well previously by the State of New York,” he said.
A serendipitous meeting on a ski slope put Frederick as a judge of a race that Monica, who would eventually become his wife, had entered and won. They married and raised two sons and a daughter in New City, New York. He was a man who was content and lived a harmonious life.
His hobby was woodworking and he was an avid golfer for 12 years. These days he relaxed by taking naps, some planned and some spontaneous.
Fein was an avid TV news viewer and had set a personal goal to reach age 100.
“Working hard,” he said, was a characteristic he admires most in others.
