I am a high school classmate of Harvey’s from Rolling Hills High School, in Palos Verdes, California.
We were on the Pep Squad together.  Harvey was fun, kind, and I hold only fond memories of our high school days.

Rabbi Harvey, as the student rabbi at Ramat Shalom in the early 80’s, was a very influential figure during my teen years. He was a vibrant, creative, and thoughtful personality who placed involving the temple’s youth at the center of his activity. I’ll never forget one Purim, Rabbi Harvey showing up in a T-shirt with “I’m the Boss!” printed on it. I remember him as an adult who would play football with us in the temple’s parking lot during breaks from Bar/Bat Mitzvah class, taking an interest in our lives, talking with us on a level at which we could relate. Rabbi Harvey was, plain and simple, a fun person, and at the same time serious and passionate. He was generous-hearted, and a roll model of moderation in a world —Jewish and otherwise—that was becoming increasingly extreme. ברוך דיין אמת. I was one of Rabbi Harvey’s Bar Mitzvah students at Ramat Shalom in Spring Valley, back in 1980.  A few years after my Bar Mitzvah, when Ramat Shalom, a very small synagogue without a lot of money, needed a cantor for the High Holidays, Rabbi Harvey asked me if I would serve as cantor.  As a high school student, I was out of my depth to be learning all of that material in just a few months, but Rabby Harvey was very encouraging, and I was able to pull it off with his support.  Rabbi Harvey was one of the most down-to-earth people one can imagine, and not only for a rabbi.  He was easy to be around, and easy to learn from.  I will always remember the kindness of his personality and the warmth of his smile.  My condolences to Karen and the family in this time of loss.
