Hammerin' Hank Heitner or as I dubbed him the "Commish" was one of my favorite people on this planet.  Why? In one word, he was "genuine."  He was a genuine human being, a caring and loving person concerned with his family and with a simple but intense commitment to the Jewish people and the State of Israel.  There was nothing phony about him; there was no pretentiousness; no fences he constructed to impress or to deceive others.  In truth, he reminded me of my old man, and of other Jewish males from a time when honor was more important than money, when a physical assault was met with a right to the chin, and a self sacrificing character that would take all the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and still march forward to defend what was right and moral about the world.  People like the Commish may die in terms of matter, but in terms of spirit, they live on and on as a tribute to their ancestors, their God, and those that come after him who deign to remember.  Let us always remember the Commish.  He was a blessing and may his family be comforted.

So sorry to hear about Henry's passing.  I have such great memories of his time at both Pine Brook Day Camp and Chipinaw.  He helped my fiancé and I move into our apartment in New York City.  He was a man of many talents and never said no to anything.  When I was in my teens, he put together an amazing skateboard ramp for my friends and I to ride. I also remember his tour of Chipinaw when my kids were very young and spending time with them in the petting zoo area. I will miss everything about Henry and have nothing but great memories!  

My heartfelt condolences to Hank's family on your loss.
I knew Hank was an educator and an environmentalist, but I got to know him through senior softball.  He created the opportunity for untold numbers of middle-aged men to play a young man's game on fields of dreams throughout Rockland County like they were the boys of summer, right through becoming senior citizens. The camaraderie among teammates resulting from his creation is one of his lasting legacies. 
We will miss him.



Condolences to the Heitner Family.
I knew Henry since 1968 and he was the maintenance man for Pine Brook Day Camp for nearly 12 years.
He was a kind man and extremely reliable and honest and loved to work and was a well organized individual.
RIP Pal !!

Though I didn’t have the honor of knowing Hank, I know his son Kenny.  He and I have known each other  for 20 years and he is a caring, dedicated friend.  His father was a true example to him of being the type of man we should all be.  May God bring peace and comfort to the entire family. 


Rest In Peace Hank.  I remember a lot of nice conversations we had over the years about Judaism and Catholicism at Deerfield Beach senior softball.  Condolences to the Heitner family.

Dear Heitner Family,
I will never forget the first time I met Hank. Stanley Dubin introduced us. 
I met a really nice guy in “dungarees”, a flannel shirt, a baseball cap AND a rope belt. 
I couldn’t wait to go home and tell Bernard that I met the very nice maintenance man at Cong. Sons of Israel. 
Little did I know that Hank was President of the congregation at the time. 
He was a wonderful person and a true friend.
