

Mel Zane, 76, husband of Carol Zane, died peacefully on October 4, 2014 after a brief illness. Born March 28, 1938 in Bronx, New York, he grew up in the Bronx and went to Evander Childs High School and later attended Hunter College and NYU University Heights Campus. After college, he moved to Garnerville, New York, where he lived for 45 years. He was employed for many years as a Biomedical Photographer at Fordham Hospital and then at New York Medical College, performing medical and forensic photography and developing his own photographs in the darkroom. In his later years, he worked as a sales associate at Bergen County Camera and also taught photography courses at Rockland Community College. Most recently he became a volunteer at Nyack Hospital and for 10 years was proud to be able to bring assistance and good cheer to the patients and staff there. In addition to photography, he had a passion for military planes and history. He obtained his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying out of the old Spring Valley Airport. In addition to Carol, his wife of 52 years, he is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Taylor of Wilton, CT, and Suzanne Zane of Portland, Oregon, and five grandchildren, Spencer, Travis, and Hannah Taylor and David and Leah Rose, a son-in-law, John Taylor, and a sister-in-law, Penny Zane. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Sonia and Israel Zipperman, and his brother Irving Zane. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday October 7, at noon at Temple Beth El, 415 Viola Road, Spring Valley, NY with internment to follow at Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, New Jersey. Memorial donations in Mel's memory may be made to the National Gaucher Foundation or the Joe Raso Hospice Residence Fund at United Hospice of Rockland.
