

Our beloved Mother, Sheila Bunin, a long-time resident of Tappan, NY died peacefully on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023 at the age of 88. She was born on August 20th, 1934 in Queens, New York. Sheila is survived by her sister Audrey & husband Arthur Goldberg of Lake Worth, FL. Son, David & wife, Rina of Jerusalem, Israel. Daughters, Lisa Bunin & fiancé David Fritz of Allentown, PA, Yona & husband Peter Carmichael of Carlisle, MA, Alana Milich & partner, Michael Vaughn of Las Vegas, NV, along with seven adored grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Bunin (2000) & beloved companion of the last eight years, Joe Katz (2022).
Sheila attended the now School of Art and Design, where she met her husband. She studied at Queens College, and then, while raising four children, she started her own marketing research company, completed her college degree, followed by earning two master’s degrees, one in special education and one in guidance and counseling. She was an educational therapist at Summit School in Nyack, New York until her retirement in 2002.
Sheila was a prolific writer and journalist. She kept meticulous daily diaries from her teens until last week. She was an active member of journaling groups and enjoyed sharing her thoughts and prose.
An avid photographer, Sheila was the chosen photographer at many community and charity events and photographed many famous people, winning awards. She delighted in learning new things, like Facebook, so she could keep up with her grandchildren, her friends, and the world.
She was active in her synagogue, Hadassah and a volunteer at Planned Parenthood, a fighter for women’s rights and a role model for every young woman who knew her.
Sheila believed in the potential in all people, seeing the positive in every situation and every closing of a door meant that a window somewhere was opening on a new bright future filled with unlimited possibilities.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 6th, 2023, 11:00 AM at Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State Street, Spring Valley, NY 10977. Interment will follow at Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, NJ.
Memorial contributions can be made in Sheila’s memory to The Orangetown Jewish Center or Planned Parenthood.
