Susanna Shoykhet (née Weinstein), age 88, of Palisades, New York passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. Susanna was born in Moscow, Russia (former Soviet Union). Born prior to WWII, her family evacuated east to the Ural Mountains. Luckily, every member of her immediate family survived and returned to Moscow after the war. She was fluent in German as a child thanks to living in Germany for several years where her father worked as an engineer. Upon their return to Moscow, she continued secondary school and always being a strong and diligent student went on to Moscow Technological Institute graduating with a Masters degree from the Faculty of Artificial Fiber. She spent the majority of her career in Russia working as a chemical engineer. She was a lifelong learner. Upon emigrating to the United States, not only did she have to learn English, she first worked as a bookkeeper, then as an engineer supporting the nuclear power industry in the US. Subsequently, she re-trained as a computer programmer and worked in that field until her retirement in 2000. She was an active member of the Jewish community of Rockland County, spending many years as a volunteer coordinator of a furniture upcycling program, connecting families wishing to donate furniture with newly arrived immigrants in need of support setting up new homes in a new land, something with which she was personally familiar.
Her accented English notwithstanding, she was well-liked whether at work or social settings, thanks to her kind and warm smile.
She was a devoted wife of Boris Shoykhet, to whom she was happily married for forty years, but lost to cancer 19 years ago. They had two daughters who survive her, Masha Shoykhet of Somerville, MA (grandchildren Gabriel, Zachary, Elizabeth) and Regina Shoykhet of Chicago, IL (granddaughter Sima).
