

B. Rock Oh, M.D., 77, of Springfield, died at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 7, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Oh was born August 17, 1938 in Chungju, South Korea, the son of Chong Moon and G. Choi. He married Kyung Kang on August 20, 1965 in Chinju, South Korea. Dr. Oh earned his medical degree from the College of Medicine at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea (1963), and completed his OB/GYN residency at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, CT (1971) and a one-year fellowship in Endocrinology at Harlem Hospital in New York City (1972). He became board certified and a Fellow of the American College of OB/GYN (ACOG) in 1974. He came to Springfield, IL after completing his training and started in private practice with the Physicians Group Clinic from 1972 until 1987, after which he went to solo private practice from 1987-2000 when he joined Southern Illinois University (SIU) as a full time faculty member. However, his association with SIU started in 1972 as a Clinical Associate. He maintained Clinical Privileges since 1972 at both Memorial Medical Center and St. John's Hospital. Dr. Oh was a role model and a master educator; he received many awards for teaching by Medical Students and Residents at SIU, including the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education (CREOG) in 2004, the Excellence in Teaching Award in Undergraduate Medical Education (APGO) in 2006, culminating with the highest honor SIU Medical School bestows its teaching faculty, the Golden Apple Award in 2008. After retirement, his commitment to medical education was so strong, that he remained a part of the teaching staff and maintained an active schedule with the medical students until his passing. Dr. Oh attended Cherry Hills Baptist Church and was one of the founders of the Korean United Presbyterian Church. He was a beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather; and he enjoyed gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Mimi Oh. He is survived by his wife, Kyung Oh of Springfield; two sons, Jimmy (wife, Cindy) Oh of Springfield and Andy Oh of Boston, MA; and seven grandchildren, Maddie, Tim, Michael, James, Jackie, Emily, and Sara. Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Cherry Hills Baptist Church, 2125 Woodside Dr., Springfield with Pastor Jeff Nelsen officiating.
