Bernice A. Meyer

She was born in Carlinville, Illinois, on August 9th, 1922, and was brought to the Lord in Baptism on August 27th, 1922 at Zion Lutheran Church. She was the loving daughter of Louis and Hulda Meyer and loving sister of Norma Meyer Krueger who all preceded her in death.

She lead a very active life during the many years God gave her. She was a charter member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Springfield, Illinois, from the time it was founded in 1931. She attended Concordia grade school, was active in Walther League, began teaching Sunday School at age 16, and later became superintendent. She counted money offerings on Sunday mornings for many years. She worked 28 1/2 years at Allis Chalmers/Fiat Allis - secretary to boss and later good friend, Henry Detjen, until her retirement in 1982.

Throughout her life she had a very special place in her heart for the elderly who were ill or confined. She took Matthew 25:36 to heart - "When I was sick, you visited me." She loved being active in sports and games - baseball in the 1930s and '40s - bowling leagues came next and then golf. She was even the only female golfer who had reached the age of 90 years who then no longer had to pay the golfing fee at Springfield City Park Golf Courses. She was also an active and competitive card player over her many years - pinochle, bridge, and hand and foot. She loved her home and garden on Whittier Avenue, and then at age 89 moved to Concordia Village, Springfield. There she enjoyed new and old friendships and the activities the village offered until the last year when her health prevented her from being able to participate in the many things she had enjoyed so very much.

She is survived by 2 nieces - Norma (Bunny) Blank, Linda Stumpf, and 1 nephew, Mark Krueger, along with their spouses - Hank, Eric, and Peggy - 11 grandnieces and nephews and 12 great-grandnieces and nephews. She enjoyed her contact with them and was always organized and ready having a multitude of activities planned when they would visit.

She loved her Lord throughout her life - her Confirmation verse was very special to her and is so meaningful for all of us: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." John 10:27-28

Celebrating her new life in heaven with her Lord and joining her parents, sister, many friends and loved ones for her is a "Plus, Plus, Plus!"
