Betty Jean Georgieff (nee Gitcho), 86, of Springfield, formerly of Canton, passed away peacefully in the presence of family on May 4, 2024, at Concordia REACH Short-Stay Center in Springfield, Illinois.
Betty was born on July 1, 1937, in Granite City, Illinois to Thomas and Eva Gitcho. She attended Madison High School in 1955 and worked at the family bakery, Busy Bee Bakery. Betty married Edward Georgieff on October 14, 1962, and they moved to Canton, Illinois, where Ed was a coach and athletic director at Spoon River College. They were also faithful supporters of Spoon River College athletics and Canton High School athletics. She worked in the cafeteria at Ingersoll Middle School for a number of years. Betty enjoyed golf, gardening, crafts, and was a talented baker and cake decorator.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Agnes and Paul Freeman; and niece, Cynthia Freeman.
She is survived by her two children, Dimana (Mark) Minder of Springfield, Illinois and Edward T. (Rhonda) Georgieff of Dunlap, Illinois; and four grandchildren, Alyssa and Kyra Minder, and Meghan and Sarah Georgieff.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, and a private family service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery at a later date.
