

Bill Maxwell, 82, a resident of Springfield most of his life, died at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at his home. He was born on June 29, 1924 in Nokomis, the son of Lemuel Ellsworth and Lucy Whitaker Maxwell. He married Helen Louise Morrell in 1946 in Nokomis. Bill attended Decatur High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 191st Tank Battalion, receiving the Purple Heart. He retired in 1981 from CILCO after twenty-seven years of employment in the gas department. He belonged to the Cilco 25 Year Club and was a charter member of the VFW Post 10302. He enjoyed woodcarving and enjoyed fixing things. He liked to spend winters in sunny Florida. He was most proud of helping build the Wesley United Methodist Church, Sherman United Methodist Church and the Princeville United Methodist Church. Bill was a family man, who loved to help others and spend time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Robert Maxwell and one sister: Marceline Goodwin. He is survived by his wife: H. Louise Maxwell of Springfield; two sons: David (wife, Diane) Maxwell of Ft. Collins, CO and Steven Maxwell of Taylorville; one daughter: Cathy (husband, Bill) Dickman of Springfield; four grandchildren: Christopher Dickman, Michael, Jim and Rich Maxwell; three great-grandchildren: Ryan, Tyler and Kyle Dickman and several nieces and nephews. The family welcomes friends to visit from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2006 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2400 N. Grand Ave. E., Springfield. Funeral Ceremonies will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2006 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Peter Wehrly officiating. Graveside Ceremonies will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will perform military honors.
