Carol J. Powell, 82, of Chatham, died on Friday, July 5, 2013 at Capitol Care. Carol was born December 7, 1930 in Springfield, the daughter of Edward E. and Sue B. Goleash Mihelsic. She married William Powell on September 8, 1956 in Springfield; he preceded her in death. Carol graduated from Ursuline Academy and attended Brown's Business School. She retired from Sangamon State University in 1992 after 14 years of service. She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker. She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Julie Sorenson; infant son, Patrick Powell; great-granddaughter, Anna Underwood; and sister, Colene Arnold. She is survived by her son, Ward W. Powell of Fountain Valley, CA; two grandchildren, Kelly (husband, Scott) Underwood of Springfield and Justin Sorenson of Chatham; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Scott Underwood, Jr., both of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
