Dr. Hagberg is survived by two daughters, Lori (Rick) Grigsby of Chesterfield, MO, and Debra Hagberg of Springfield; and one son, Craig E. Hagberg of Salt Lake City, UT. In addition to his children, Dr. Hagberg is survived by one sister, Jayne Schnittker; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Kevin Hagberg; the mother of his children, Jean Lundberg Wright; and his beloved partner of 32 years, Gloria Gaffney.
Dr. Hagberg graduated from Springfield High School and Springfield College. He graduated with his doctorate degree in dental surgery from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1953. He served his country in the United States Navy and the United States Army from 1948 to 1956 where he practiced in the Army Dental Corps and Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC, then specialized in general and children’s dentistry at Fort Belvoir, VA, Army hospital.
Dr. Hagberg was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield where he served as a leader of Boy Scout Troop #211. He was also a member of the Springfield Motor Boat Club, Island Bay Yacht Club, the Springfield Ski Club, and the Illinois State Dental Society. Music was an important part of his life as he played alto saxophone for several bands during college. He enjoyed listening to oldies and big band music.
Visitation: Thursday, November 30, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 South Grand Avenue West, Springfield, IL.
Service: A private graveside service will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Rev. Julie Blythe officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the United States Army Funeral Honors.
