Charlotte M. “Charlie” Meyer, of Springfield, passed away at her home Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013.
She was born in Woodriver, IL, July 28, 1917, the daughter of August H. and Nina M. Gaskins Beiser. She was a graduate of Shurtleff College. Charlie married Robert B. Meyer June 17, 1939 and he preceded her in death March 30, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her son, Robert B. Meyer II.
During the 1960’s and 1970’s, Charlie worked her dear friend and neighbor, Annie Meredith at A&M Permit Service. She attended St. Agnes Church and, in later years Chatham United Methodist Church.
To Charlie, family was always first and foremost. As a girl, she spent summers at her grandparents’ cottage at New Piasa Chautauqua. Her dream of living in a cottage there was realized as she made Chautauqua her home for nearly 10 years. Always hospitable, she wanted family and friends to enjoy it as much as she did.
Charlie’s other loves were learning and creating. Over the years, she took classes in woodworking, Chinese cooking, photography, piano, psychology, writing, Spanish and interior design. Artistic, her instinct to create beauty was unstoppable. She and Bob loved the adventure of living in another country for several weeks each year, making many friends. She wrote a book about some of their experiences.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan (husband Jim) Seiber of Springfield, her grandchildren: Sinta Seiber of Dawson, IL, Wren (husband Tim) Visser of Phoenix, AZ, Robert B Meyer III and Matthew (wife Nicole) Meyer both of Springfield. She has four great grandchildren: Vaelen Lane, Niah Visser, Drake Meyer and Grae Visser.
Services for Charlie will be Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 at 4 pm at the Chatham United Methodist Church, Rev. Sara Isbell officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior at the church. Graveside services will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Friday Dec. 20, 2013 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the New Piasa Chautauqua Church Assembly P.O. Box 69 Elsah, IL 62028.
