

Cheryl Ann Sanders, “Cheri”, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in Springfield on October 26, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on September 25, 1948, in Springfield, Illinois, Cheri was the cherished daughter of Leonard Kane and Bonnie (Fortman) Kane.
She was first married to Gary L. McCormick in 1967, until his passing in 2006. In 2010, Cheri found love again and married Marvin Sanders, with whom she shared many joyful years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters-in-law, Carol Barker Kane and Dianne McCurley Kane.
Cheri is survived by her children, Melanee McCormick of Springfield and Kevin McCormick of Orlando; five stepchildren, Jonathan Sanders, Timothy Sanders, Elizabeth Sanders, Chelsea Sanders, and Kayla Powell; and brothers, Michael Kane and Lawrence Kane, both of Springfield. She was a grandmother to 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A devoted member of Sacred Heart Church, Cheri lived her faith with quiet grace. She dedicated many years of service to Franklin Life Insurance Company, Old Country Buffet, and Target.
Cheri was known for her extraordinary kindness — a gentle soul who made everyone feel welcome and loved. She had a remarkable talent for crochet, creating beautiful handmade Afghans that have become treasured gifts for family and friends. Her creativity and generosity were woven into every stitch.
Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial: Family will receive friends at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Sacred Heart Church, 722 S. 12th St., Springfield, until the time of Mass at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. James Isaacson, S.J.C., celebrant.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Animal Protective League.
