I have known Coley for many years and loved sharing broadcast memories with him. I always felt he and Tim were a great team and their radio accounts - especially of high school games - was a great pleasure to listen to. He was so gracious and kind to me every time we were together. As Jim Ruppert wrote - he was a great broadcaster and an even greater Man. I will miss him.

I grew up in Springfield, listening to Coley do sports play-by-play on WTAX. So he was something of an idol to me. But when I started working for The State Journal-Register, I got to know Coley as a fun person who loved to just talk sports. Even when I visited him last December, he was anxious to talk about what was going on in the sports world. We'll miss him during the LPGA golf tournament this week. My condolences to the Cowan family!

I had the pleasure of working with Coley for several years at WTAX. He was always a joy to work. My father, Bruce Bagg also worked with Coley during his entire tenure at the station. I know for a fact his feelings are exactly the same. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Cowan family. Springfield's sports community lost a great person this past weekend.

I am so sorry for your loss of a husband and father. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. My heart go out to the family at this time and in the days ahead. Know that God holds Coley in His arms and will watch over the family who he leaves to grieve.

Coley had that sonorous voice which God blessed him with. By the accepted definition of the term, he was a gentleman: He said what he meant and he meant what he said. My mother would have called him "good people". He will be missed.

I've known Coley for over 30 years. It was always a pleasure to be in his presence. Such a positive perspective, always asking how others were, giving a light-hearted feel to conversation, a precious, precious person. We will miss him in this life, as goes to broadcast all the sporting events in heaven. God only made one Coley. I had the good fortune to have met him.

I never had the opportunity to meet Coley in person, though I followed him from his first broadcasts on WTAX. His voice exuded credibility, knowledge, gentleness. I once told Shelby Harbison that WTAX was in my DNA—having listened each and every day to all those wonderful disc jockeys and sportscasters, starting in grade school. Besides Coley’s sportscasts, my husband and I faithfully listened during the Christmas season to his hosting of “The World’s Most Beautiful Christmas Music.” What a special treat that was! Coley was the Springfield area’s version of a National Treasure. When we count our blessings, Coley is right up there; he was a piece of the puzzle that makes up our quality of life here. He would be someone I would choose to be immortal. We offer our sincerest sympathies to the Cowan family in your enormous loss. We trust you will be sustained by your faith, your family, your friends and the community.

We wish to express our deepest condolences to Mr Cowan's family. We will never forget Coley's kindness and encouragement to our son John when he was first breaking in at WTAX almost 30 years ago.

Mrs. Cowen and Family: When I think of Douglas Ave. UMC, my former home church, I think of Coley; his "tie corner" at the annual garage sales; his pleasant attitude to new members of the church and his love of music and his sharing of his grandson's talent at church. He was so proud of his grandson. God bless you all as you grieve this significant loss. I for one will sincerely miss him. He was one of a kind! But you all knew that!
