

Coley C. Cowan, 84, of Springfield, passed away at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Heritage Manor. Coley was born February 12, 1927 in Henderson, KY, the son of Lee Andrew and Flossie Turner Cowan. He married Eleanor Moore on August 12, 1951 at First United Methodist Church in Providence, KY. Coley was a 1945 graduate of Barrett High School in Henderson, KY and attended Purdue University and Evansville College. Coley started his prestigious career in radio and sports broadcasting in Huntington, WV at WSAZ in 1951 on the radio and TV as a sportscaster and sometimes served as disc jockey from 1951-1956. He then went on to KWK in St. Louis, which is now KMOX. He worked at WTAX from 1960-1997 and was at WFMB from 1997-2011. Coley proudly served our country in the Army and was stationed in Egypt and France. He was a member of Springfield Sports Hall of Fame and Illinois High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Coley belonged to Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church and had taught Sunday School for many years and served on various committees. He enjoyed bowling in many bowling leagues, golfing, reading and watching sports in general. Coley was a very caring, outgoing, kind and compassionate man that will be greatly missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ray Turner Cowan and William Harding Cowan. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Cowan of Springfield; children, Karen (husband, Tim) Gunn of Columbia, MD, Dana (husband, Tony) Cowan-Moyer of Springfield and Coley E. (wife, Becky) Cowan of Springfield; grandson, Andrew David Cowan of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 S. Douglas Ave., Springfield, with Rev. Julia Melgreen officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be provided by Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
