Connie Smith

Connie Lee Riley Smith, 68, of Springfield, died at 4:50 p.m. on Monday, August 13, 2012 at St. John's Hospital. Connie was born November 22, 1943 in Beardstown, the daughter of Lionel "Bumps" and Dorothy McGovern Riley. She married Valjean Smith on August 9, 1969 in Beardstown. Connie was a graduate of Beardstown High School, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen in 1960. She worked as a court reporter in the late 60's, early 70's and was a part owner of Kids Only clothing store until her retirement. Connie enjoyed gardening, going to garage sales, traveling, reading and playing piano. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Valjean Smith of Springfield; one son, Doug (wife, Jennifer) Smith of Mercersburg, PA; one daughter, Valerie (husband, Brian) Vincent of Springfield; five grandchildren, Ashleigh and Alexandra Flynn, Brooke Vincent, and Cole and Nora Smith; two sisters, Janet (husband, Andy) Shipley of Hannibal, MO and Christina (husband, Ed) Graham of Colfax; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
