

Cordell Irwin “Corky” Dunn, 67, of Springfield died at 8:08 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2003 at St. John’s Hospital. Cordell was born December 12, 1936 in Morrison, IL, the son of Karl T. and Verna Hogarth Dunn. He married Phyllis Hawkins on February 14, 1959 at the First United Methodist Church in Springfield with Rev. Joseph Albrecht officiating. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Springfield for 45 years where he was active as a Sunday School teacher, choir member and assisted in a variety of committees and activities. He was also a camp director and teacher for The State of Illinois Department of Corrections and taught art at the Edwards Art Association for many years. He also spent two years at the Springfield Hardee’s restaurant. He received his Masters degree from the University of Illinois Springfield and received a double major in English and Art from Western Illinois University. He had been employed as a teacher for Springfield School District 186 teaching at several local schools including: Jefferson Middle School and Southeast High School and most recently at Lincoln Land Community College. At the time of his death he was employed at Lincoln Land Community College where he was a teacher of Psychology. He was selected adjunct teacher of the year at Lincoln Land Community College in 2001. Mr. Dunn had been employed for 38 years by the Springfield School District. He taught at Southeast High School for twenty years, and retired from Jefferson Middle School. Cordell was a finalist for “teacher of the year” with the Springfield School District in 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife: Phyllis of Springfield, two sons: David C. (wife, Paula) Dunn of Bird Island, MN, Timothy “Tim” E. (wife, Stacy) Dunn of Rochester, three daughters: Jean (husband, Jack) McAllister of Belleville, Laurie (husband, Peter) Harjes of Riverton, Andrea Dunn of Los Angeles, CA, nine grandchildren, one great granddaughter, two brothers: Karl H. Jr. (wife, Sharon) Dunn of Waunakee, WI, James “Jim” Dunn of Springfield and several nieces and nephews. Private graveside services will be held at Friday, February 27, 2004 at Joel Hall Cemetery in Athens with Dr. Roger Rominger officiating. A memorial for the celebration of Cordell’s life for his friends and family will be held at First United Methodist Church West at Koke Mill & Wabash on Saturday, February 28, 2004. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. with services at 11:45 a.m. with Dr. Roger Rominger officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 501 E. Capitol Ave. Springfield, IL 62701. The family of Cordell Irwin 'Corky' Dunn is being served by Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield.
