David J. Brandis

David J. Brandis, DDS, 70, of Springfield, passed away on November 25, 2010 at St. John's Hospice. David was born February 14, 1940 in Springfield, the son of Genevieve Crovetti and Louis J. Brandis, Sr. He married Linda Kirk on July 28, 1984. David practiced dentistry in Springfield for 40 years and he was devoted to his profession and his patients. He retired from dentistry on November 8, 2010. He was a graduate of Cathedral Boys High School, Florida Southern College and Emory University School of Dentistry. He served in the Illinois Air National Guard. He was an avid aviator and held his pilot's license for over 50 years, owning and flying a wide variety of aircraft. Dave was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Rochester. He was also a member of several professional and aeronautical organizations, the Sangamo Club and Island Bay Yacht Club. He loved his family, his home on Lake Springfield, bird watching, fishing, boating, and enjoying the outdoors. He had many good friends and was a good friend to many. Dave supported many charities, especially those serving education, children and animals. He personally rescued countless wild and domestic animals, including several that lived long and happy lives in his home. He was also an avid runner and fitness enthusiast and loved Cardinals baseball and Notre Dame football. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Louis J. Brandis, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Linda of Springfield; step-daughter, Christine Kirk of San Clemente, CA; two brothers, Robert (fiance, Karen Yeaman) of Taylorville and Thomas Brandis of Everglades City, FL; two sisters, Louise (husband, Kenneth) Burger of Shelby Township, MI and Shirley Dillard of Ft. Meyers, FL; many nieces, nephews and cousins and four cats. Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 29, 2010 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. A Concelebrated Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at St. Jude Catholic Church, 633 S. Walnut St., Rochester with Rev. Robert William Spriggs, celebrant and Rev. R. Dean Probst, concelebrant. Burial will follow at Rochester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: G.I.S.T.
