He was born on August 31, 1940, in Effingham, IL, the son of Harry and Hilma C. (Deters) Willenborg. David married Mary Ann Schnellbacher on August 10, 1968, in Manchester, MO.
David graduated from St. Anthony High School in Effingham and earned his bachelor’s degree from Loras College in Dubuque, IA. He went on to work as a teacher for both Mount Auburn and Taylorville High Schools. David was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus # 364, where he was an officer for many years. He enjoyed golf and was part of the Knights of Columbus golf league.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barb Willenborg; and brother, Alf Willenborg.
David is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann Willenborg of Springfield; daughter, Kris Souva of Springfield; sons, Dave (Stacey) Willenborg of Norman, OK and Mike (Erin) Willenborg of Springfield; grandchildren, Lucy, Alex, and Hank Souva, Patrick, Matthew, and Owen Willenborg, and Jack, Caroline, and Charlie Willenborg, all of Springfield; sisters, Irene (Ron) Donsbach of Bishop Creek, IL and Marty (Dave) Brumleve of Effingham, IL; brother, Tom (Brenda) Willenborg of Wisconsin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He often joked, “I get up every morning and check the obituaries and if my name isn’t in there, I go on about my day”. Today he is checking from heaven and likely making new friends, as he did everywhere he went.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Memorial Gathering and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:00 AM – 10:45 AM Wednesday November 22, 2023, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos Ave., Springfield with Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 AM with Very Rev. Daniel J. Bergbower, V.F., celebrant. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
