Dorothy Helen (Davis) Doedtman

Dorothy Helen (Davis) Doedtman, 86, of Springfield, died Thursday February 18, 2021 at Memorial Medical Center, with family by her side. She was born on July 8, 1934 in Carrollton, IL to Kenneth and Florence (Roche) Davis.

She married Richard W. Doedtman, Sr. in Springfield on November 17, 1956; he preceded her in death in 2014.

Also preceding her in death were her son, Rich Doedtman, Jr; her parents; and siblings, John, Edgar, Kenneth, and Marilyn Davis.

Dorothy was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, Springfield Junior College, and attended Western Illinois University. She was very proud of being the first lay teacher at Little Flower School. Some students, used to having only nuns for teachers, addressed her as "Sister Mary Doedtman." She was recognized by former students even into her 80s. She later worked for the Internal Revenue Service until her retirement.

Dorothy was very active in the Catholic community, giving special attention to Koinonia, and she was a Dominican Associate. She had also been involved with PORA and Bereaved Parents of Springfield. She enjoyed riding her bicycle into her 70s and loved many outdoor activities. Dorothy led a life of love and happiness. Those who touched her life often remarked on her kindness, compassion, and humor. She will be sorely missed.

She is survived by children, Mary Kay Doedtman of Springfield, Karen (Jerry) Ciullo of Bryson City, NC, and John Doedtman (Carolyn Murphy) of Springfield; grandchildren, Rochella Doedtman, and Brandon and Kieffer Ciullo. There are also five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 1, 2021 at St. Agnes Catholic Church with Rev. Richard Chiola, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
