Although I didn't know Doug all that well, my brother, Paul did. Doug came to my mind today as I made a donation to a friend running in the "Escape from Alcatraz" triathlon for brain cancer research. A donation was made in memory of Doug. I hope these years has brought some measure of peace to your family. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.

My deepest sympathy goes out to you all. I remember Doug as a very happy, fun man, who enjoyed his family, and was proud to be a Hembrough. I played with Doug on the Bears Junior football team and against him when I was at Springfield High School. On the field and off the field, Doug was very respectful and polite, and made me laugh too many times while playing against him. I will always remember him with that huge smile. He was the most positive minded person I had ever met.

I was saddened to learn of Doug's struggle with cancer. Doug and I weren't great friends as he was an upperclassman when I first came to Mizzou. But he was a joy to be around even if he and his friends made initiation to the offensive line a little hard to handle (being paraded around Columbia wearing women's clothes). I'm still scarred. Stacey and family, This is the third time I am trying to write this as I am so overwhelmed with Doug's loss. What an amazing friend he has been to Luke over the years. The trips to Vegas, "the boat", golf outings and just dinner. Doug was one of the few people in this world that Luke would just drop things for so they could spend time together. There were many times when Doug covered Omaha for UMB that I didn't even plan dinner for the family because Luke would want to be with Doug. Luke doesn't let many people within his private circle of friends. He obviously felt from the beginning that Doug was qualified to be amongst this circle. I got to know Doug while working on "This Week in Mizzou Football" TV show. He was a fantastic guy to be around, and although I did not keep in touch with him, I will never forget a great guy, truly a Tiger.

Doug was a joy to know. I remember his warm smile, his courtesy, his infectious laughter and his zest for life when he and my son were teammates at Mizzou. Harriet and Stacey, you and your families are in my thoughts and prayers.

I learned of Doug's battle through a story in the St. Louis Post Dispatch. I feel a bit of a connection because my mother, who's birthday was November 29, also battled glioblastoma for nine months before passing away in March of 2004. She was 54 and also left a positive impression on many people (much like Doug has). My thoughts and prayers are with all of Dougs family, even though we've never met.

Doug was my good friend and roomate in the ATO fraternity at Mizzou for one semester. During football practice I was a noseguard and he was a center. We had many long practices where we had to go against each other, day after day in challenging conditions and times, but despite the daily battles on the field, we would always wind up at the same dinner table, studying at the library and hang out in our room. We had a lot of good laughs while we there and became very good friends. I loved Doug and will miss him forever.

To Stacey, Brooke, Ryan, Cole and all the Hembroughs, Thank you for the honor and privilege of spending the last two days with you. Though the loss of my buddy, Doug, leaves a hole in my heart and a void in my life, his passing was made immeasurably easier by witnessing the love you all have for each other. As you well know, Doug was (is) a remarkable soul...equal parts compassion, energy, wit, intellect, competitiveness, honor and love. Dear Stacey and family; Doug was one of the most personable people I have ever met. To me he was a gentle giant,who made me feel as much of a contributer to our 2-man golf team as he was on an outing in Shangrila,Oklahoma.He was 2nd to none in the cheerleading department as far as getting the best performance possiblie out of me or who ever he was teamed with. I will treasure his memory when we were in Tucson,Az. after He won that tournament and how badly he wanted to take us all to Vagas. Couldn't get a flight and we ended up playing blackjack in our room using sunflower seeds as $5.00 chips. God Bless and keep you and the children. Doug and I met through golf buddies and we were partners in a golf tournament in Tuscon for a cancer research benifit. Doug was almost 30 years younger and had a handicap that was in the lower single digits and mine in the 20's. We had a couple of practice rounds where he coached me in his good humored manner and I came to understand how smart and amiable he was. He never once became frustrated with me and he had a lot of reason to be frustrated. I learned a great deal about golf and more importantly about a positive attitude from Doug. It was a great experience that I remember vividly and feel very fortunate to have been on his team. He coached well and we won the tournament or I should say he won the tournament through his positive spirit and determination. His infectuous positive attitude along with a friendly demeanor will always be remembered by those fortunate enough to know him. God Bless Stacey and their children.

The entire Szcinski family would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the Hembrough Family. We'll always remember all the good times with our son Dave & Doug throughout their grammer school days at CTK & all the sporting events & good times at Griffin.

I went all through grade school and high school with Doug. I had so much of a crush on him during those years that my mother recognized his name when she saw it in the paper this past weekend. (I'm the chubby girl who always stood beside him in the top row of our class pictures because I was so tall!) I remember how awkward I always felt during that time and how friendly he always was to me. In H.S., I looked forward to "paper day" when the Griffin boys would bring their school paper to SHA because I could get a glimpse of him and his smile. When I think of him now, this is what I still see. Stacey, my heart goes out to you and your loss. I am married now these past thirteen years with a nine year old of my own. I cannot begin to imagine your sorrow. I want you to know that you and your children are in my prayers now and always.

Dear Hembrough Family, I was extremely sad to hear about Doug and the very unfortunate circumstances. I remember Doug when we were Griffinites. He played varsity with us even though he was a sophmore. I've been reading about Doug and all he stood for. Wow, he really inspires me to do more with less. He teaches me about prioritizing; love rules. When I go back to the mountain next month for the winter, I will definitely make a run from the top to the bottom, nonstop, in Doug's honor. I will always think about Doug's amazing life. I'll try to put a little "Doug Hembrough" into my own life. God Bless Brian

The thing that I and probably everyone who met Doug will remember the most about him, was that there always seemed to be a smile on his face. He was always one for a good joke and the occasional bad one as well. Doug, you will be dearly missed. The best way to measure the impact of the life you have led is the legacy that you leave behind. Dear Hembrough Family, Doug always had a smile on his face. He would always have something positive to say, whether times were good or bad. Doug truly inspired me by his outgoing personality. Dear Hembrough's, It is with my deepest and heart felt simpathy that I am writing this note. Doug was very special to a large number of people including myself. He was very much a hard worker and never walked by an opportunity to be better as a person, player or student. I know this because in many ways, he was a person I would look too for direction as a fellow player and student at the University of Missouri. If there is one thing I will remember it was his never ending work ethic in all he did. What an example for me as a peer as I am sure he is to Stacey and the kids. Our visit and welcome into your home earlier in the year was a true testiment to your family's success as it relates to values and an environment of love. It was nice to be around.
