He was born on July 27, 1942 in Springfield, the son of the late Glenn and Agnes Pehlman.
Fast Eddie was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend. He was an avid Harley rider since the age of 14. He would drag race in his younger years, enjoyed AMA Flat Track events and annual trips to Sturgis with friends. If you were lucky enough, you got to enjoy his fried chicken at the Springfield Mile.
Joining the Navy he was able to see much of the world aboard the wind-class icebreaker USS Edisto, with Helicopter Utility Squadron Four (HU-4) as an aircraft engine mechanic. While stationed at the South Pole he was able to participate in testing dive suits and experience going under the ice in the frigid waters of the Southern Ocean. Ed was in the Carpenter’s Union Local 270 and worked as a carpet installer for 50 years as owner of Ed Pehlman Floor Covering. He mentored countless workers and his 3 daughters. He loved cooking and watching the cooking channel, with his favorite being Julia Childs’ show. He was an avid fan of motorcycle, sprint car, late model, and NASCAR racing and he frequented the Old Shaheen’s Speedway in Springfield, the Jacksonville Speedway, Talladega Speedway, and Daytona Speedway. He enjoyed fishing any time he got the chance, frequenting the Illinois River in Havana, IL. Ed never knew a stranger, never hesitated to help a friend in need, and was always up for enjoying an ice cold Busch Light with everyone.
Ed is survived by his 3 daughters, Suzie (Mike) Cutler of Dawson, IL, Stacy Pehlman of Springfield, and Shelly Reeter of Sherman; his sister Kathy (Butch) Lyons; 7 grandchildren, Brandi Pehlman, Johnny Pehlman, Kelsey Cutler, Katie Cutler, Austin Pehlman, Ethan Reeter, and Ty Reeter; 10 great-grandchildren; 1 niece Jodi (Doug) Emery; and 2 nephews, Matthew Rowlcliff and Michael Rowlcliff.
